DirectTV vs, Comcast?

I’m looking into changing from Comcast Cable to DirectTV for a couple of reasons and I am looking for any feedback that anyone has on the subject. I’m very interested in the NFL Sunday Ticket, which DirectTV is currently offering at $70 for four months (with all local channels and several premium ones, too). It looks like that increases to $99 after the four month period (although I’m trying to find out from them if I can at that point only subscribe to a more basic programming option instead of the premium one since I have no interest in HBO, etc.) I currently pay $80 for my comcast cable (in order to have the HD channels and the DVR) so it’s really not that much more for the DIRECT tv option unless I’m really missing something.

Any help anyone has would be greatly appreciated!!

  1. If you can get the football that you are after with your current cable people, I see no reason to change. HDTV rocks. It really turns out to be more of a hassle most times to go to the trouble of changing providers. Especially if they are going to hike their rates after a short while. Be careful of that, they could suck you into a deal that will be way more expensive and you won’t be able to get out of.

  2. I had a really good experience with them when I lived in a bother place. Then I moved to where I’m at and have to have Comcast. I hate Comcast and pay nearly double for the same thing I had with the satellite.

Jules,DirectTV is the only provider that offers the NFL Sunday Ticket (14 games every Sunday) and being a fan of a team that’s not local (Go Patriots!) it’s hard for me to see many games each year. I’m making sure to cover the bases so I don’t get sucked into anything, that’s part of why I posed the question here and why I’ve been talking with their Customer Service Reps!

  4. Amy, an important question. Hi there, by the way….does DirecTV give you all the local channels in HD? Here in CT, there are more and more HD channels, local (cbs, nbc, abc, fox, the new wc, pbs…and then…tnt, espn 1 and 2, nesn, yes, and 6 more.) Let me know. Take care

  5. I’ve no idea about this, but I have Comcast and am always contemplating a switch to sattelite.Of course, I’m lucky enough to watch the Pats every sunday on the local channel. That and the pre game and post game, and post post game, etc. 🙂

  8. I live in the Detroit area and having been looking for a new team to cheer for over the last decade (or two.) Would you recommend the Pat’s as a good team to be a fan of?

  9. I work for a cable company, so take this with a grain of salt, as I am bound to be biased…1) Satellite service really does deteriorate when it is raining. I’m not saying that a few sprinkles is going to kill your reception, but the fact is, rain does impact the signal.2) These satellite companies advertise really great deals. Beware, when they get you on the phone, they will try to upsell the heck out of you and then all of a sudden, you’ll be paying out the wazoo.But… cable doesn’t have the NFL package…

  11. hubby and i were going to sign up for dish network but when the installer came to our townhouse he wasn’t able to install the dish because we didn’t have a clear line of site to the link-up satellite. when we tried an alternate carrier, direct tv, we learned that we wouldn’t have access to any local stations. they’d all be from other states. make sure before switching to check those two things.

  12. Great point, Gretch. I’m pretty sure Amy is looking for all the “good” stations in HD, and that’s what is offered in her area. But the sat. must be aimed in the same direction, whether it be directtv or the dish network. If she has a clear line of sight and an HD TV, there is no losing. I use Comcast HD Cable because I’m in CT., and in the woods, with no line of sight sat. access. Excpt for Siirius. Somehow that works. And I’m a Howard fan. Take care. Hi Amy!
